在爱尔兰神话中，lir或lêr（“海洋”）是海洋之神，是Manannan mac Lir的父亲，Elatha的儿子。

 

Children of Lir是一个爱尔兰传说。这个传说是爱尔兰神话的一部分，记载在许多中世纪散文和童话诗手稿中。

 

Bodb Dearg（the red）当选为Tuatha Dé Dannan的国王后，做为王位竞争者的Lir很烦。为了安抚Lir，Bodb将他的一个女儿Aoibh嫁给了他。Aoibh为Lir生了四个孩子，一个女儿Aoife，三个儿子——Aed及双胞胎兄弟Fiachra和Conn。

 

Aoibh死后，孩子们都非常想念她。Bodb想保持Lir开心，又将另一个女儿Aoife嫁给了Lir。Aoife嫉恨孩子们互相亲密无间的爱和对自己他们父亲的热爱，所以她策划除掉孩子。一次孩子们去探访Bodb，途中她命令她的仆人杀死他们，但仆人拒绝了。充满愤怒的她尝试自己去杀孩子们，但她没有勇气。所以她用魔法把孩子变成天鹅。她诅咒他们做为天鹅，并且不得不花300年待在Derravaragh港湾（父亲城堡附近的港湾），花300年待在Moyle海，并且花300年待在Glora岛。在诅咒的最后，他们会听到钟声，昭示着一个新的上帝已经到来。后来当Bodb听说这事，将Aoife永久的变成了空气怪。

 

孩子们花了很长时间待在每个地区，后来他们受到来自一名住在Inis Gluaire的教士MacCaomhog（或称mochua）的庇护，他用银链将孩子们连在一起，以确保他们永不失散。一个版本的传说讲道，当国王离开天鹅的避难所，教会的钟声将天鹅从魔法中解放出来。

 

今天

Children of Lir的塑像坐落在爱尔兰首都都柏林Parnell广场纪念花园中。它象征爱尔兰民族经过900年的奋斗，脱离英国殖民统治独立，就像天鹅“重生”前的900年。许多爱尔兰人现在相信童话的Children of Lir是一个预言，那就是爱尔兰最终将摆脱英国的占领。
